Steve, a longtime DuPont employee and outdoor adventurer, lost his leg in a 2015 motorcycle crash when a Jeep struck him near home. He remembers the surreal detail of seeing only a sock where his boot should have been, while first responders used a belt as a tourniquet before life-flight delays and multiple surgeries. Martha recounts the fear, long hours of waiting, and how intentional positivity and strong community support carried their family through. A workplace accident during a celebratory tug-of-war game resulted in the traumatic loss of her right thumb. Despite delayed care and isolation in the ER, Maddie rebuilt her world with occupational therapy, early EMDR, strong family support, and a durable mechanical prosthetic from Point Designs, capable of gripping with 150-lb load strength. Her story highlights the value of advocacy, mental-health care, adaptive innovation, and finding community without limits.
